FSU football enthusiasts have been celebrating a prosperous January, as the Seminoles continue to shine in the transfer portal. Florida State has already secured commitments from 13 new players and shows no signs of slowing down as they bolster their roster for the upcoming 2024 season.

This influx of talent has solidified various positions within the team, although the program remains committed to nurturing homegrown talent through recruiting, rather than solely relying on the transfer portal. Nevertheless, the transfer portal plays a significant role in today’s college football landscape.

Notably, Florida State has been eyeing the Alabama Crimson Tide this offseason, fueled by their desire to compete for a championship after being overlooked by the College Football Playoff committee.

Head football coach Mike Norvell made a significant impact by bringing in four transfers from the Crimson Tide via the transfer portal. Despite Alabama’s interest in Norvell following Nick Saban’s unexpected retirement, Norvell chose to remain with Florida State.

In a recent development, Alabama’s redshirt freshman linebacker, Shawn Murphy, is currently on a visit to Florida State. Murphy, a former four-star recruit from the 2022 recruiting cycle, has only recorded five tackles in his two-year career with the Crimson Tide, having redshirted in 2022. Importantly, he still has three years of eligibility left.

Murphy is undoubtedly a talented prospect with a strong high school background, but his performance at Alabama has been relatively limited. Many fans have been discussing the need for the Seminoles to bolster their linebacker depth through the transfer portal, especially given the uncertainty surrounding this position (though DJ Lundy’s decision to return for his senior season in 2024 has provided some stability).

The question remains: Is the Alabama transfer merely a valuable addition for depth, or could he potentially develop into a standout player? While DJ Lundy is expected to hold one of the starting linebacker positions, there’s room for players like Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, or Justin Cryer to step into more prominent roles. This dynamic will be crucial to monitor as we progress through the spring season.
