Each week, the talk of Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley needing to be fired gets louder and louder. They have reached a fever pitch after yet another embarrassing loss in Week 11 to the Green Bay Packers has dropped their record to 4-6.
It is almost unfathomable that the Chargers are a losing football team given the talent on their roster. But, Staley’s defense is what has let the team down most often. They fail to get stops when they need them most and are one of the worst units in the NFL.
The blame can be placed mostly on Staley’s shoulders because he is responsible for their performance. He calls the defensive plays for the Chargers and whatever he has been doing isn’t working.
After the loss to the Packers last weekend, he snapped at a reporter who asked about whether he would continue calling plays. It is something that has been brought up previously and Staley seems to have reached his breaking point.
“You can stop asking that question. I’m going to be calling the defenses, okay? So we’re clear. So you don’t have to ask that again,” Staley said post game.
His comments have drawn the ire of a lot of people. One of the people who have ripped into Staley for what he said is former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach, Rex Ryan.
Ryan, who now does studio and analyst work over at ESPN, did not hold back when talking about Staley during a recent segment on ESPN’s Get Up. He was not only critical of how he responded to the reporter but was critical of his resume and what he did to land the head coaching job with the Chargers.
“What do I think of that? I think he should go back to Division III football where he belongs,” Ryan said. “Look, this guy. Look at his resume, man. I mean, I’m sorry. He spent one year coordinating a team that my wife could coach with Aaron Donald and all those guys. Stop it.”
There isn’t a head coaching seat hotter in the NFL than Staley’s. Not only is he overseeing one of the most disappointing teams of the 2023 season, but the Chargers suffered a historic meltdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in last season’s playoffs.
Leading 27-0 late into the second quarter of their Super Wild Card Weekend matchup, the Chargers managed to blow that lead, losing 31-30. Staley was lucky to retain his job after that, but will likely get his walking papers if the team misses the playoffs altogether this season.
