The Philadelphia Eagles may be 6-1, but there has been some concern about the play of quarterback Jalen Hurts this season.
Hurts has amassed 10 turnovers throughout the first seven weeks, putting him second among all players for giveaways in 2023.
That is in stark contrast to last year, when Hurts turned the ball just eight times over the course of an entire 17-game campaign. As a matter of fact, Hurts’ ability to be economical with the football in 2022 was a big reason why he finished second in MVP voting.
So you can understand why there would be some trepidation surrounding Hurts’ play this season, as the signal-caller has thrown eight interceptions while losing a pair of fumbles.
In the Eagles’ win over the Miami Dolphins this past Sunday, Hurts turned the ball over twice.
However, former Philadelphia running back and current Fox Sports analyst LeSean McCoy is not worried about Hurts.
McCoy cites the Eagles being tied for the best record in the NFL as a reason for why he isn’t sweating Hurts’ shaky play thus far, but that isn’t exactly a great argument.
Yes, Philly is 6-1, but let’s keep in mind that that does not necessarily mean we should discount how well (or poorly) Hurts has been performing..
Sure, over the course of a 17-game campaign when you are playing a whole lot of bad teams, those turnovers won’t matter as much. But if you get into the playoff against the best clubs in the league and you are still giving up possessions, problems will arise.
Of course, the Birds were able to top the Dolphins—a good team in their own right at 5-2—in spite of Hurts’ two giveaways, but those turnovers could prove costly come January.
The good news is that there is plenty of time for Hurts to fix his issues. We are only seven weeks into the season. It isn’t even November yet.
That being said, Jalen Hurts’ ball security is unquestionably something to monitor the rest of the way. If he continues being careless with the football in the coming weeks, perhaps McCoy will be singing a different tune the next time he discusses the topic.
Philadelphia will take on the Washington Commanders this Sunday.
