The 2023 season has not gone as planned for the New York Giants. After going 9-7-1 last season and making the playoffs, defeating the Minnesota Vikings on the road during Super Wild Card Weekend, major struggles have ensued.

The Giants got off on the wrong foot this season, losing to the Dallas Cowboys 40-0 on opening night. That set a negative tone for the campaign, the complete opposite of how 2022 was when they went on the road and defeated the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.

Things didn’t get much better, as they were shut out in the first half by the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. A miraculous second-half comeback evened their record at 1-1, but it was the only success the team would find with Daniel Jones on the field.

Fresh off signing a four-year, $160 million deal this offseason, Jones had a dud of a 2023 campaign. The touchdowns he threw in the second half against the Cardinals are the only ones he had all season.

Jones suffered a neck injury in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins that sidelined him for three games. He returned in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders, where he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his knee.

It was a worst-case scenario for the Giants, who have played more competitive football with backups Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito leading the offense. They have accomplished things behind the same shaky offensive line with limited weaponry that Jones didn’t come close to achieving.

That has led to a lot of people speculating about what is to come at the quarterback position for the Giants. General manager Joe Schoen put that speculation to rest during his press conference on Monday morning.

According to Schoen, the expectation is that once Jones is healthy, the starting job will be his once again. However, there could still be changes at the position this offseason as Taylor is a free agent and DeVito is under contract.

Because of the contract Jones signed, there is virtually zero chance he will be off the roster in 2024. The Giants do have an out in the contract after the 2024 season, which many people are expecting them to exercise given how poorly the 2023 season went.

There is a lot wrong with the Giants offense that needs to be addressed. But, Taylor and DeVito, an undrafted rookie free agent, executing it at a more efficient level than Jones did is certainly concerning.

On a two-game winning streak, New York likely won’t be picking high enough in the 2024 NFL Draft to select a top quarterback prospect. For at least one more year, Schoen and Brian Daboll are hitched to the Daniel Jones wagon, as he will have a lot to prove during the 2024 season.
