A lot has gone wrong for the New York Giants during the 2023 NFL season. They have been unable to replicate the success they had in 2022 when they made the playoffs and even won a postseason game in the first season of the new regime.
General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll both came over from the Buffalo Bills last season to replace Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge. Their disastrous tenure left the Giants in a brutal spot with Schoen and Daboll having a lot to clean up.
In Year 1, they experienced some impressive highs, going 9-7-1 and defeating the Minnesota Vikings during Super Wild Card Weekend. But, the gap between them and the upper-echelon teams in the conference was evident when the Philadelphia Eagles blew them out in the Divisional Round.
This season, ugly losses like that one in the playoffs to the Eagles have become commonplace. The team has shown more life in the last two weeks with Tommy DeVito leading them to two straight wins.
At 4-8, the Giants’ season likely isn’t going to result in a playoff berth, but there is still a lot to play for. Players and coaches will essentially be auditioning for spots in 2024 and beyond, as ownership could look to shake things up in the offseason.
One move that you can be sure the team won’t make is firing Daboll. NFL author Gary Myers recently spoke about New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick coming back to New York should he be relieved of his duties there.
In the opinion of Myers, that isn’t happening. While Robert Kraft could still opt to move on from the future Hall of Famer, Belichick won’t be making the move back to East Rutherford to replace Daboll this offseason.
“A return to the Giants? Not happening. They are almost certainly sticking with Brian Daboll. Belichick had an opportunity to return to the Giants in 2018 when it was getting messy in New England, but it didn’t get very far,” wrote Myers.
The Giants’ organization certainly has a soft spot for Belichick, who was the defensive coordinator for two Super Bowl teams. He oversaw the dominant “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” in 1986 when they won their first Super Bowl.
But, as Myers stated, the ship has sailed on a return for Belichick. If he wanted to return home to New York, he could have done so years ago. Instead, the Giants hired Pat Shurmur, which continued an ugly chain of events that was part of some of the worst performances in franchise history.
