The Indianapolis Colts are running out of time to trade running back Jonathan Taylor. Plenty of teams have had some level of interest in trading for him, with one of them being the Green Bay Packers.
Taylor is scheduled to return from the PUP list next week, and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline is just a few weeks away.
However, the Colts had been maintaining a high asking price for Taylor, making it essentially impossible for rival clubs to pull off a deal for the star halfback.
Initially, the Colts were asking for a first-round draft pick or a return equal to a first-round pick in value. But now, the club may be altering its demands.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL media, Indianapolis is now looking for a return that is equivalent to a high second-round pick in exchange for Taylor.
Could this prompt the Packers to get involved once again?
The Packers held trade discussions with the Colts for Taylor back in August, but talks did not go very far due to Indy’s asking price. But here’s the thing: Green Bay owns the New York Jets’ second-round pick this year, and judging by how things have gone for the 1-3 Jets thus far, that selection could end up being fairly high in the second round.
The Packers could certainly include the Jets’ second-round in a package for Taylor, which may ultimately be enough for the Colts to pull the trigger.
Taylor is currently recovering from an ankle injury he suffered late last season. The 24-year-old is in his fourth NFL campaign and led the league in both rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18) in 2021. He totaled 861 yards and four scores through 11 games last year.
Green Bay is 2-2 and is coming off of a rough Week 4 loss to the Detroit Lions in which the club’s rushing attack was thwarted. The Packers’ running backs totaled just 29 yards on the ground, displaying the team’s need for an elite running back like Jonathan Taylor.
The Packers will battle the Las Vegas Raiders next Monday.
