Packers Linked To Intriguing RB As Potential 2024 Target

Gus Edwards, Green Bay Packers
NFL Analysis Network

The Green Bay Packers‘ rushing attack has certainly not been a point of strength this season, as they rank just 20th in the NFL in rushing offense.

As a result, the Packers are widely expected to pursue a running back in free agency this coming offseason, and Bleacher Report’s NFL staff sees a perfect candidate for them: Gus Edwards.

Green Bay is not projected to have a whole lot of cap room in the spring, so springing for a top-tier back like Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry may not be financially feasible.

Edwards, however, should be affordable.

Through 12 games this season, Edwards has rushed for 590 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Rutgers, went undrafted but caught on with the Ravens in 2018.

He appeared in 11 contests during his rookie campaign and was impactful, registering 718 yards and a couple of scores while recording a robust 5.2 yards per tote. The following year, Edwards posted nearly identical numbers in 16 games, finishing with 711 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per attempt.

Edwards continued his remarkable consistency in 2020, tallying 723 yards while reaching the end zone six times. He also averaged five yards per carry. Injuries then limited the Liberian native to just eight games last season, where he totaled 433 yards and three scores while registering five yards per attempt.

The power back would likely be a relatively cheap option for the Packers and could provide for them what they hoped A.J. Dillon would.

Green Bay is 6-6 on the season and has worked its way back into the NFC playoff conversation as a result of three straight wins.

The Packers will head on the road to take on the New York Giants next Monday.
