Former Green Bay Packers player, Steve Okoniewski, known for his tenure with the team’s defense, passed away on Tuesday, as announced by the University of Montana.

“We lost a Montana legend. Steve Okoniewski was a Grizzly All-American and 2nd-round NFL Draft pick in 1972. After a six-year NFL career, he became an educator and a state-champion high school football coach in Montana and Wisconsin. Our hearts are with his family.”

Okoniewski, a standout for the Grizzlies in the early 1970s, breathed his last at the age of 74.

Having played for the Packers for two seasons during his six-year professional football career, Okoniewski held the position of right defensive tackle in 1974. Initially drafted 41st overall by the Atlanta Falcons, he commenced his NFL journey with the Buffalo Bills before making his mark with Green Bay and ultimately concluding his playing days with the St. Louis Cardinals.

During his time with the Packers, Okoniewski garnered commendation from the iconic Bart Starr. Starr, praising the defensive tackle’s work ethic despite his perceived lack of physical prowess, remarked, “He’s not blessed with the most physical talent, but there’s not a harder worker. You’d like to be able to transplant his heart into some other people.”

Okoniewski’s connection with the city of Green Bay ran deep, evident from his sentiments expressed in a 2010 interview where he articulated his fondness for the community.

“I didn’t play on successful teams, and I wasn’t the most talented player. I had to work extra hard because I didn’t have the natural abilities. … But I’m proud to say, I was a Green Bay Packer and live in Green Bay.”

The passing of Okoniewski marks a somber day for both the Packers and the Montana organizations. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
