Packers Named Best Fit For Former Pro Bowl Quarterback

Ryan Tannehill, Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are set at starting quarterback, as Jordan Love showed this past season that he is clearly the team’s franchise signal-caller moving forward.

But what about the depth chart behind love?

Currently, Sean Clifford is tabbed as the Packers’ primary backup under center, which does not exactly provide Green Bay with great insurance heading into 2024.

That’s why Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team feels that the Packers represent the best fit for free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill is surprising still available in free agency in spite of representing a terrific veteran backup for numerous teams around the NFL.

Yes, the 35-year-old is coming off of a rough 2023 campaign with the Tennessee Titans in which he threw for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 appearances and eight starts, but he has an established track record of at least being serviceable.

Tannehill, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins with the eighth overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

To say that Tannehill was a late bloomer would be an understatement.

The veteran spent the first seven years of his career with the Dolphins before joining the Titans in 2019, where he began the season as Marcus Mariota’s backup but eventually supplanted Mariota and went on to make his first and only Pro Bowl appearance after leading the league with a 117.5 passer rating.

The following year, Tannehill proceeded to have what was probably the best season of his career, throwing for 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 106.5.

Since then, Ryan Tannehill has been on a steady decline and is clearly no longer a starting-caliber quarterback, but he could certainly serve as a reliable backup somewhere.

The Packers represent one of those places.
