Could Aaron Jones’ tenure as the Green Bay Packers featured running back be coming to an end? Pete Dougherty of The Green Bay Press-Gazette thinks so.

Dougherty mentions Jones’ declining health as an issue and notes that the Packers would save $5.4 million by cutting him this offseason. He says that general manager Brian Gutekunst could ask Jones to take a paycut, but all of Jones’ problems would probably deter him from offering such a pact.

Jones has only played in seven games this season due to hamstring and knee injuries. During the time he has been on the field, he has rushed for 245 yards and a couple of touchdowns while averaging 3.7 yards per carry. He has also logged 19 catches for 169 yards and a score in what has been, by far, the least productive campaign of his NFL career.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at UTEP, was selected by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He had a decent first couple of years before finally breaking out in his third season, when he racked up 1,084 yards and a league-leading 16 touchdowns while registering 4.6 yards per tote. Additionally, he caught 49 passes for 474 yards and three scores.

Jones then made his first Pro Bowl in 2020 after finishing with 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns as a rusher, posting a robust 5.5 yards per attempt. Plus, he snared 47 balls for 355 yards while reaching the end zone a couple of times.

Last year, Jones set a career-high with 1,121 rushing yards. He punched in a pair of touchdowns on the ground and also hauled in a career-best 59 receptions for 395 yards and five scores.

Green Bay is 6-7 on the year and just had its three-game winning streak snapped by the New York Giants this past Monday.

Jones and Co. will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend.
