Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has had a crazy season, and it has gotten even wilder this week.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said that Alexander injured his ankle during the team’s jog-through practice session on Wednesday.

“It was kind of a freak deal yesterday,” LaFleur said, via Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers’ official team website. “We had mostly a jog-through, and he stepped on somebody’s foot and rolled his ankle. He’s doing everything he can to be available. I’d say it’s day-to-day.”

Alexander was limited to just seven games this season due to injuries and a bizarre suspension after he took the field for a coin toss without being named a team captain (he was suspended by the Packers). During his time on the field, he logged 27 tackles, a forced fumble and five passes defended.

“It was a freaky deal,” added LaFleur. “He was focused, locked in, doing everything we were asking him to do, and it just happened.”

This is obviously significant news for Green Bay, who will be going up against one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL when it takes on the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on Sunday.

When healthy, Alexander is one of the top cornerbacks in football. Last year, he made his second Pro Bowl after racking up 56 tackles, five interceptions and 14 passes defended.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Louisville, was selected by the Packers with the 18th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He made his first trip to the Pro Bowl in 2020 after finishing with 51 tackles, a sack, a pick, a forced fumble and 13 passes defended.

Injuries are nothing new to Jaire Alexander, as he has played just one full campaign in six seasons. He was also limited to just four contests in 2021.

Green Bay went 9-8 this season and landed the final Wild Card spot in the NFC.
