The Green Bay Packers will be releasing running back Aaron Jones, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The news comes after the surprising announcement that the Packers would be signing Las Vegas Raiders halfback Josh Jacobs.

When Green Bay reached an agreement with Jacobs, it appeared that the club would be rolling with both Jacobs and Jones in its backfield, but the Packers are obviously going in a different direction.

Thus ends Jones’ seven-year tenure in Green Bay.

Jones is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he missed six games due to injuries. During the time he was on the field, he rushed for 656 yards and a couple of touchdowns while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He added 30 catches for 233 yards and a score.

The 29-year-old came on at the end of the year, as he logged five straight 100-yard performances between the last three regular-season games and the Packers’ two playoff games. During Green Bay’s Wild Card Round win over the Dallas Cowboys, Jones totaled 118 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Jones, who played his collegiate football at UTEP, was selected by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed a couple of solid and very efficient seasons with Green Bay to begin his career, and then, in 2019, Jones broke out, racking up 1,084 yards and a league-leading 16 rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 49 receptions for 474 yards and three scores.

The following year, Jones made the Pro Bowl after rattling off 1,104 yards while reaching the end zone nine times as a rusher. He logged a robust 5.5 yards per carry and also caught 47 passes for 355 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Jones added one more 1,000-yard campaign in 2022, registering a career-high 1,121 rushing yards.

However, it appears that the Packers think Aaron Jones is on the decline after an injury-riddled 2023.
