The Green Bay Packers have agreed to sign Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL media.
This is a move that could be described as the first real stunner of free agency.
The Packers had not previously been mentioned as one of the top potential suitors for Jacobs, with teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans being considered the frontrunners.
But, apparently, Green Bay felt the need to add Jacobs to a backfield that already includes Aaron Jones.
Talk about a dynamic tandem.
Jacobs is coming off of a rather rough 2023 campaign, as he played in just 13 games due to injuries and rushed for 805 yards and six touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.5 yards per carry. He added 37 catches for 296 yards.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Raiders with the 24th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He got off to a great start, registering 1,150 yards and eight scores while logging a robust 4.8 yards per attempt during his rookie campaign. Jacobs then made the Pro Bowl the following year after registering 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground, but he posted just 3.9 yards per tote.
Jacobs continued to struggle with his efficiency in 2021, recording 872 yards and nine touchdowns as a rusher, tallying a pedestrian four yards per attempt.
The Tulsa, Ok. native then broke through with his best season to date in 2023, leading the league with 1,653 rushing yards while punching in 13 scores on the ground. He averaged a hefty 4.9 yards per tote and hauled in 53 receptions for 400 yards en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection.
The Packers are obviously hoping they get that version of Josh Jacobs in 2024.
