The Green Bay Packers could certainly use some more weapons for young quarterback Jordan Love, and they have between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline to acquire them. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports sees Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz as a potential acquisition for the club.
The Packers already have a solid young tight end in rookie Luke Musgrave, who has logged 18 catches for 159 yards over Green Bay’s first five games.
However, the Packers definitely need more offensive pieces, and having two good tight ends doesn’t hurt.
The Cardinals are just 1-5 on the season and appear headed toward a rebuild in the spring. With Ertz being 32 years old, he doesn’t really fit their timeline, so trading him over the next couple of weeks would make sense for the struggling franchise.
Benjamin proposes that Green Bay could send a 2024 sixth-round draft pick to Arizona for Ertz.
That seems like a bit of a light return for Ertz even at this stage of his career, as he is no longer the elite Pro Bowl pass-catcher he was from his days with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Still, Ertz remains productive and has logged 24 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown on the year. In his first full season with the Cards last season, he totaled 47 receptions for 406 yards and four scores.
The catch is that Ertz has another year remaining on his deal after this season and is slated to earn just under $8 million in base salary in 2024, so that could possibly deter some teams from dealing for him.
Or, perhaps, it could actually incentivize a club that would not just want Ertz as a rental.
Either way, Zach Ertz would certainly provide Love and the Packers’ passing game with a reliable threat, particularly on short and intermediate routes.
