Could the Miami Dolphins actually swipe running back Saquon Barkley in a trade with the New York Giants?
The Dolphins could use another halfback, as rookie phenom De’Von Achane is currently on the injured reserve list as he recovers from a knee injury.
Miami boasts the NFL’s most explosive offense, so the more talent, the merrier.
Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated suggests that the Dolphins should trade a 2024 second-round draft pick to the Giants for Barkley and a 2024 fourth-rounder.
This would provide Miami with yet another weapon both in the ground game and the aerial attack, as Barkley is one of the better dual-purpose backs in the league.
With Achane returning later in the season, the Dolphins would have a lethal triumvirate of Barkley, Achane and Raheem Mostert in their backfield, and surely, head coach Mike McDaniel would find a way to properly utilize all three of them.
Of course, New York would have to actually want to do this for it to happen.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll recently met with Barkley and told him that the team intended to keep him, and this was prior to the club’s Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders.
Still, New York is just 2-5 and was unable to reach a long-term deal with Barkley prior to the season. It seems fairly obvious that the Giants don’t want to pay Barkley his asking price, meaning that he could very well walk via free agency in the offseason.
For that reason, it’s entirely possible Big Blue has a change of heart before the end of the month and becomes open to dealing Barkley for the right return.
However, I’m not so sure that the Giants would be all that amenable to sending Saquon Barkley and a fourth-round pick just to pick up a second-rounder, especially considering that Miami’s second-round pick will probably be toward the back of the draft order.
