The Indianapolis Colts have faced criticism over their approach to free agency this offseason, primarily centered around their focus on re-signing existing players rather than making big splashes in the open market. This strategy led to a slight dip in national power rankings after the initial free agency frenzy.

Key players like Michael Pittman Jr., Kenny Moore II, Grover Stewart, and Trey Sermon were among those the Colts prioritized in their re-signing spree.

General Manager Chris Ballard defended this approach during discussions with media at the NFL’s annual meetings in Orlando, stressing the importance of continuity. He argued that maintaining a stable roster minimizes the emergence of gaps when crucial players depart.

“No doubt we looked into free agency in totality,” Ballard said. “I mean, we looked at everybody. It kind of worked out where it ended up being a lot of our own guys, which are all good players.”

In essence, Ballard champions the value of continuity over change for its own sake. He believes in building upon the foundation already in place rather than making moves simply for the sake of making them.

The decision to maintain a roster similar to the previous season’s makes sense given the circumstances of 2023.

Despite setbacks like Jonathan Taylor‘s limited appearances and starting quarterback Anthony Richardson‘s brief tenure, the Colts managed a 9-8 record. Ballard likely sees potential in a fully healthy squad and prefers to assess their capabilities before making significant roster alterations.

Ultimately, the success of the Colts’ approach will unfold over time. If the team performs exceptionally well in 2024, Ballard’s strategy will be hailed as brilliant. Conversely, any shortcomings will inevitably invite scrutiny and second-guessing.

Regardless of the outcome, the Colts’ offseason decisions ensure ample fodder for discussion and analysis in the football world.
