Colts Pull Off Major Trade With Patriots In Bold Proposal

The Indianapolis Colts have been one of the NFL’s most pleasant surprises over the first five weeks of the season, getting off to a 3-2 start and sitting in a first-place tie in the AFC South. That could lead them to be aggressive in trade talks and the New England Patriots could be a potential partner.

Because the Colts play in a very winnable division, they may very well become buyers between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline, and there is no question that the team has some holes to fill.

A current area of weakness for Indianapolis is tight end.

The Colts are employing Kylen Granson and Drew Ogletree as their tight ends right now, but the two have combined for just 20 catches thus far.

Bleacher Report’s NFL staff notes that Indianapolis could certainly use another big-bodied pass-catcher, which is where Patriots tight end Mike Gesicki could come into play.

The Patriots signed Gesicki to a one-year deal back in the spring, but things are not exactly working out for Gesicki in Foxborough.

New England is just 1-4 and is looking worse and worse with each passing week, meaning the Pats could sell off some pieces in the coming weeks.

Given that Gesicki will be a free agent in the offseason, he seems like a prime candidate to be moved.

The 28-year-old has logged just 12 receptions for 116 yards in 2023, but he has shown the capability to be a productive tight end in the past. Gesicki registered over 700 receiving yards in back-to-back campaigns with the Miami Dolphins in 2020 and 2021, so we know he has it in him.

Indy could move one of its young tight ends in a potential trade for Gesicki, providing the Patriots with a younger player to utilize in a likely rebuild. Whether or not that would even be necessary is debatable, though. The Colts may be able to just get by by offering New England a mid-round draft pick for Gesicki, as it’s not like he possesses a ton of value.
