Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce hauled in 12 receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown during the Chiefs’ Week 7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, marking his second straight 100+ yard performance. After the game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes explained how he keeps connecting with the eight-time Pro Bowler.
“He’s a special player man,” Mahomes told James Palmer of NFL Network. “The way he understands the game, understands coverage and gets himself open, it’s special.”
Kelce has amassed 31 catches for 370 yards and a couple of scores over the past three weeks, and on the season overall, he has totaled 48 receptions for 525 yards and four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Mahomes put forth what was probably his best effort of the year on Sunday, going 32-for-42 and achieving season highs in both passing yards (424) and passing touchdowns (four). He has thrown for 2,017 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 69.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 101 over Kansas City’s first seven games of 2023.
The win over the Chargers also represented a breakthrough offensive performance for the Chiefs as a whole, as they racked up a season-high 483 total yards.
Sunday’s victory marked only the second time Kansas City has scored 30 points this year, with the first instance coming back in Week 3 when the Chiefs dropped 41 in a 31-point victory over the hapless Chicago Bears.
Kansas City had otherwise been laboring offensively, which led to both Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes expressing frustration in recent weeks.
Perhaps the Chiefs’ outing in Week 7 can help the defending champions get back on track.
Kansas City is 6-1 and will look to win its seventh straight contest when it takes on the Denver Broncos next weekend.
