Key Giants Defender Sidelined After Knee Surgery

The New York Giants are a team that a lot of people are keeping a close eye on in the coming days. Training camp hasn’t even started yet and they are already in danger of not having players in the lineup when they kick off their season in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

The biggest one that people will be looking out for is running back Saquon Barkley. Negotiations with him and the Giants are reportedly at a stalemate as there has been no progress on a long-term deal. The two sides have until 4 p.m. ET on Monday, July 17th to hammer out a contract or Barkley cannot be signed until after the 2023 season.

There have been recent reports that if a long-term deal isn’t reached, there is a legitimate concern that Barkley may not be in the lineup during Week 1 of the season. He isn’t the only player the Giants could be without, as they received some devastating news about linebacker Jarrad Davis.

According to Jordan Ranaan of ESPN, Davis recently underwent surgery on his knee and is expected to miss significant time. At this point in the offseason, it is fair to assume that significant time means he will be sidelined into the regular season.

Davis was a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2017 and someone that was actually linked to the Giants at the time. He eventually joined New York last season after being signed off of Detroit’s practice squad.

After appearing in only three games with the Lions all season, Davis was immediately thrust into the Giants’ starting lineup. He started the regular season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles and their two playoff games against the Minnesota Vikings and Eagles again.

The Florida product looked to be in line for a significant role once again in 2023 as he was getting first-team reps this offseason. The Giants are thin at linebacker, even with the addition of Bobby Okereke in free agency, as Darrian Beavers is still recovering from ACL surgery.

The starting linebacker spot could now be given to Micah McFadden, who had a strong rookie season. He appeared in all 17 games, starting seven of them, despite starting down the depth chart as a fifth-round pick out of Indiana.

Davis is a significant loss for the Giants as he does bring a lot of experience to the table. He has started 51 games in his career with 68 total appearances, totaling 344 tackles with 11 sacks and 20 tackles for loss.
