Jimmy Garoppolo and the Las Vegas Raiders are 3-4 this season, and they have dealt with a lot of adversity on and off the field as they look to rebuild from a hugely disappointing 2022 campaign.
This Sunday, they will play the Detroit Lions, and they’re hoping to get Garoppolo back in action after he missed last week’s blowout loss to the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Josh McDaniels.
“Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was back at practice on Thursday and head coach Josh McDaniels said he’s ‘hopeful’ to have his starter available Monday at Detroit,” wrote Field Level Media.
Garoppolo suffered a back injury in Week 6 versus the New England Patriots. He has been banged up this season, as he missed Las Vegas’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers because of a concussion.
In his five games so far in 2023, he has completed 68.0 percent of his pass attempts and thrown for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns, but he also has eight interceptions, which leads the NFL, and his 5.4 percent interception rate is a career-worst.
The Raiders brought Jimmy Garoppolo into the fold after the San Francisco 49ers moved on from him following the emergence of Brock Purdy last season. He has played in the NFC Championship Game in three of the last four seasons, and he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl four years ago, where they held a late lead over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, only to lose.
It is looking like another lost season for the Raiders. Multiple players have criticized the organization and its culture, and there have been some trade rumors swirling around the team. Even star wide receiver Davante Adams, who is seemingly on his way to what would be his seventh-straight Pro Bowl selection, hasn’t been immune to those trade rumors.
Defeating the Lions, who are in first place in the NFC North with a 5-2 record, would go a long way in helping them climb into the race for the final wild-card playoff spot in the AFC.
