Rumors about University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL are hardly new. We hear them every year, but typically, it happens later in the college football season. But here we are in September, and there is already chatter that the Los Angeles Chargers are making a play for Harbaugh.

According to Matt Marchese of Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Harbaugh has discussed moving to Los Angeles with someone close to him and is reportedly engaged in serious discussions with the Chargers.

Marchese adds that unless current Bolts head coach Brandon Staley takes Los Angeles to the Super Bowl, Harbaugh could ultimately end up in LA regardless of what the Chargers do this season.

This past offseason, Harbaugh interviewed for the Denver Broncos head-coaching position, but ultimately elected to return to Ann Arbor for another season.

Harbaugh began the 2023 NCAA campaign by sitting out the first three games due to a school-imposed suspension due to recruiting violations back in 2020.

The 59-year-old last coached in the NFL back in 2014, when he completed his fourth season with the San Francisco 49ers. During his time with the 49ers, Harbaugh went 44-19-1 and made a trip to the Super Bowl in his second season. He led San Francisco to a pair of NFC West division titles and made three playoff appearances, where he went 5-3.

Jim Harbaugh’s time in the Bay came to an end when he went 8-8 and missed the postseason during his final year at the helm. He has been Michigan’s head coach since 2015, going 78-25.

The Chargers have gotten off to a 1-2 start this season and have experienced moderate success under Staley’s direction, as they went 19-15 in his first two years. The club’s most impressive season to date under Staley came last year, when Los Angeles went 10-7 and made it to the playoffs for just the second time since 2014. The Bolts ended up losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card Round.
