Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is entering the fifth year of his rookie deal, meaning that he is currently on track to become a free agent at the end of next season.
Many have wondered if the Dolphins are going to extend Tagovailoa past 2024, and general manager Chris Grier was rather diplomatic when asked about the situation.
“Our goal is to try and get something done,” Grier said, via Alain Poupart of All Dolphins. “[Tagovailoa’s agent] Ryan Williams has been great. Tua has been great. We’ll see. There is no timeline on it. At the end of the day, you know how these deals get done. They are complicated deals and we’re building a team through free agency as well. We’ll work through it and see if we can get something done.”
Tagovailoa is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards to go along with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He completed 69.3 percent of his passes while posting a passer rating of 101.1 en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
While many have labeled the 25-year-old a system quarterback and have questioned whether or not Miami can win a Super Bowl with him under center, you can’t deny his numbers.
Grier seems to think things are trending in the right direction.
“I think we’re hopeful,” Grier said. “When you go through these things — you guys have all been around and you see other teams go through that — these are deals that very rarely come together quickly. There are a lot of pieces and moving parts. We’ve had positive discussions so far, and we’ll keep working here throughout the offseason.”
Tagovailoa, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Dolphins with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
After a couple of mediocre seasons to begin his career, Tagovailoa finally broke out in 2022, totaling 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight picks in 13 starts.
Miami went 11-6 and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs this past year.
