Miami Dolphins: 3 Players to Watch in Preseason Week 2 vs. Carolina Panthers

Every Cornerback Not Named Howard or McCain

Okay, maybe I’m cheating a bit with this last one. This isn’t a specific player to keep your eyes on, but rather an entire group as a whole. This week it’s been impossible to avoid the chatter about the Dolphins looking at bringing in a veteran corner to compete for the starting role opposite Xavien Howard. The team experimented with outside earlier this week, sliding rookie safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the nickel corner. While that personnel group intrigues me, it’s unlikely to be a permanent grouping. McCain is one of the best nickel corners in the league, and Fitzpatrick is a natural safety.

Earlier in the week, the team was rumored to have interest in veteran cornerback Bashaud Breeland, but no contract came out of his visit with the team. Miami is also likely to show some interest in the recently released Orlando Scandrick, but I’m not confident anything will come out of that, either. It’s likely the team will enter the season with what they already have on the roster.

I may be looking at the situation through rose-colored glasses as a fan of the team, but I’m confident that with a little more time and experience, these guys can get the job done. This week’s matchup against the Panthers is going to be a great opportunity for guys like Torry McTyer, Cordrea Tankersley, and Tony Lippett to show up. To prove that they have what it takes to be a starter in this league. I’m still putting my chips behind McTyer to come out as the day one starter, but I’m going to be keeping a watchful eye on all three this week.
