With the Minnesota Vikings seemingly more open to trading Kirk Cousins, could the New York Jets swap Zach Wilson for him?

As we get closer to the trade deadline in the NFL, one of the more interesting names to monitor is Kirk Cousins of the Vikings. With a few teams in the need for a quarterback, Cousins would provide a boost this season, and likely wouldn’t cost too much to acquire as an upcoming free agent.

Now that Justin Jefferson is going to be out for at least a few weeks, the Vikings are likely thinking more about getting a top pick than they are making the playoffs. Recently, The Ringer’s Benjamin Solak spoke on the Bill Simmons podcast about the Cousins situation and even spoke about maybe the Jets going after him.

“Kirk’s in the last year of his deal and I would be legitimately stunned if we see him in a Viking uniform in 2024,” Solak said. “This team desperately needs to infuse with youth and start a new era, and I think that you’re gonna see trade-deadline interest in Cousins.”

“Oh? A little new home, new Zach?” Solak responded. “That I don’t mind. I feel like the Jets will want to get Zach Wilson out because it’ll just get [rid of him], right? You kind of rid yourself of that polarizing figure.”

A potential trading of quarterbacks would be a wild move to see, but it makes sense for both sides. Even though he has looked a bit better, Wilson still has a lot of developing to do if he is going to make it as a quarterback in the NFL. For a team like the Vikings, letting him develop while likely not winning too many games this season makes sense to see what he could become.

For the Jets, getting Cousins instantly makes them a better team and once again would give them a shot at the playoffs. Acquiring Cousins also wouldn’t lock the Jets into having to keep him next season, as Aaron Rodgers is hopefully expected to come back.

Quarterback swaps don’t happen often in the NFL, but this one would make sense for both sides. Cousins will certainly be a name to monitor in the coming weeks before the trade deadline.
