When the New York Jets signed running back Dalvin Cook back in August after he was released by the Minnesota Vikings, he was expected to play a major role in what was supposed to be a dynamic offense.
Instead, Cook has been a relative non-factor over the Jets’ first six games, rushing for just 109 yards on a meager 2.8 yards per carry. He has also logged just nine catches for 46 yards, as he has clearly fallen well behind second-year halfback Breece Hall on New York’s depth chart.
Cook’s lack of activity has resulted in trade speculation, and this past weekend, Dianna Russini of The Athletic confirmed that the Jets are indeed shopping the four-time Pro Bowler.
Could the Vikings pursue a reunion with Cook?
Max Dible of Heavy.com thinks it would be a swell idea.
Of course, Cook spent the first six years of his career with the Vikings and established himself as one of the best backs in football, logging four straight 1,000-yard campaigns between 2019 and 2022. It’s entirely possible he would have posted 1,000 yards in each of his six seasons with the club had it not been for the torn ACL he suffered during his rookie campaign that limited him to 15 games between Years 1 and 2.
Minnesota is currently without star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who is on the injured reserve list due to a hamstring injury. For that reason, the Vikings could certainly use another offensive weapon, and they definitely know how to utilize Cook.
The Vikes actually released Dalvin Cook during the offseason in order to clear $9 million in cap room, but the possibility remains that they could re-acquire him via trade. Still, whether or not Minnesota, which is just 2-4 heading into its Monday night matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, would actually want to part with assets to bring Cook back into the fold remains to be seen.
