Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson underwent season-ending surgery to repair his injured right shoulder earlier this week, and now, more details have been revealed.

According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, Richardson’s procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has also done work for late NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. As a matter of fact, ElAttrache repaired Rodgers’ torn Achilles earlier this season.

Holder adds that Richardson will began rehab on Thursday.

It’s an unfortunate end to what looked like a very promising rookie campaign for Richardson, who had thrown for 577 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while completing 59.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 87.3 in four games. In addition, Richardson also rushed for 136 yards and four scores while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

The 21-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was selected by the Colts with the fourth overall pick of the NFL Draft back in the spring.

Richardson’s blend of size, skill and athleticism has had scouts, fans and media pundits salivating, and he certainly displayed some of that talent in the early stages of 2023.

However, Richardson’s reckless play style has had many worried that injuries will be a major issue for him. He suffered a concussion in Week 2 before ultimately going down with the shoulder injury in Week 5.

Hopefully, the youngster will make adjustments to his game moving forward in order to ensure that he will enjoy a long, healthy NFL career.

Gardner Minshew is now under center in relief of Anthony Richardson, and given Minshew’s experience, Indianapolis should still remain a playoff contender for the rest of the year.

The Colts are 3-4 and will take on the New Orleans Saints this Sunday.
