Going into the season, Derek Carr and the New Orleans Saints looked like the best team in the NFC South on paper. Considering the competition was so weak overall, many expected them to run away with the division crown.

However, the Saints have done anything but the sort.

Through 13 games, New Orleans has gone just 6-7 and is locked in a three-way tie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons for first place in the division. As a matter of fact, due to tiebreakers, the Saints are technically third.

Not surprisingly, Saints fans have grown increasingly frustrated with the club, and the inconsistent play of Carr has been a topic of discussion among the New Orleans faithful all season.

The veteran signal-caller spoke about the fan base this week, saying that he understands why there has been some aggravation when asked about getting booed by the home crowd.

“I do understand that their expectations are our expectations,” Carr said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “So, their frustration, that’s the way they can show their frustration. My frustration, we show it in our way. All of our expectations were so high and our expectations still should be high. Everything is still in front of us. I keep staying this — this is the time to do it. This is the time to get hot, right now. I was on a team where this was when we got hot, and that was a great time in our stadium. There was great energy in the city. And we want to do that for our city.”

Derek Carr has thrown for 2,880 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.4 this season.

The 32-year-old signed with the Saints last March after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, where he spent the first nine years of his NFL career. He is yet to win a playoff game.

New Orleans will face a surprisingly surging New York Giants team this Sunday.
