The Denver Broncos look like they are headed nowhere fast once again.
After a disappointing 5-12 campaign last season, the Broncos have jumped out to an 0-2 start in 2023, and in the challenging AFC West division, Denver may have to call it curtains early.
There has already been some speculation that the Broncos could move some pieces in the lead-up to the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline, and one name that has been thrown around is wide receiver Courtland Sutton.
A few years ago, Sutton appeared primed to vault himself into the conversation as one of the league’s best receivers. That was back in 2019, when he hauled in 72 receptions for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
However, the following season, Sutton tore his ACL, and things have not been the same for the Southern Methodist University product ever since.
While Sutton remains a productive receiver, he has not come close to replicating his 2019 statline, and with Sutton having a couple of years remaining on his deal (he hits free agency in 2026), the Broncos may want to cut bait now and recoup some value for him while also shedding his salary.
Could the New Orleans Saints step in and engage Denver in trade talks?
While the Saints are not desperately in need of a wide out (Michael Thomas, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are getting the job done), some extra depth at the position couldn’t hurt. Plus, in an incredibly winnable NFC South division, New Orleans may want to go the extra mile in an attempt to separate itself from the pack.
Funny enough, the Saints could trade the 2024 second-round draft pick they recently acquired from the Broncos in the Sean Payton deal back to Denver in exchange for Courtland Sutton.
This would provide quarterback Derek Carr with an incredibly deep receiving corps, and it would represent pretty nice value for the Broncos.
