Giants’ Drew Lock Sets The Record Straight On QB Competition

The New York Giants signed quarterback Drew Lock in free agency this week, and Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said that the reason Lock departed Seattle for New York was because he would have the opportunity to compete for the starting job.

Well, apparently, that isn’t the case.

During his introductory press conference with the Giants on Friday, Lock made it clear that Daniel Jones will be New York’s starting signal-caller heading into 2024.

“Daniel Jones is the starter on this team and that’s been conveyed to me,” Lock said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I need to come in and push Daniel to be the best he can be, and that’s the role that I played for Geno, that’s the role that I played for Teddy, that’s the role that Brett Rypien played for me when I was the starter in Denver. I’ve had both sides of this. I’ve been the guy to push the starter and I’ve been starter pushed by the backups, so it’s all about making that room the best it can be, and if we do that, the sky’s the limit for this team.”

This does not come as much of a surprise.

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Giants last spring, and the second year of his deal is fully guaranteed. Knowing that, it seems hard to envision New York starting Lock over Jones.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the Giants will likely select a quarterback with the sixth overall pick of the NFL Draft next month.

Lock played in four games and made two starts with the Seahawks in 2023, throwing for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 81.2. He went 1-1 in his starts.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Missouri, was originally selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He spent three seasons with the Broncos before joining Seattle last year.

We’ll see what type of playing time Drew Lock gets in the Big Apple in 2024.
