The New York Giants are in desperate need of help at wide receiver, and Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated thinks that Mike Evans could be the answer.
Evans is slated to hit free agency next month, and with the Giants having a little bit of money to play with this offseason, they could make a play for him.
New York does have some young talent in the form of pieces like Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt at wide out, but the fact of the matter is that Darius Slayton led the team with 770 receiving yards in 2023. So, as skilled as guys like Robinson and Hyatt are, they haven’t proven much of anything yet.
Evans, on the other hand, is an established commodity.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar is coming off of a season in which he hauled in 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and a league-leading 13 touchdowns and has posted over 1,000 yards in each of his first 10 seasons. That’s an NFL record.
Evans, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M, was selected by the Buccaneers with the seventh overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
The 30-year-old has made five trips to the Pro Bowl, with his best season coming back in 2018 when he racked up 86 catches for 1,524 yards and eight scores.
Of course, Evans’ age may serve as a deterrent to the Giants, as New York is not all that close to contending. Verderame notes that Tee Higgins may be a better option for Big Blue in that regard, but the issue is that Higgins would almost certainly be more costly due to the fact that he is considerably younger.
Regardless, if the Giants are going to move forward with Daniel Jones under center, they need to get him some help, and their current receiving corps don’t inspire a ton of confidence.
We’ll see if New York pursues Mike Evans in the coming weeks.
