The New York Giants are a team that many people are keeping an eye on heading into free agency this offseason. Originally, that was where many reports indicated that they would be on the lookout for a quarterback.
When the 2023 season ended and exit interviews were had, general manager Joe Schoen said the starting quarterback job would be Daniel Jones’s once he was healthy enough to return. A veteran quarterback was expected to be their target who could compete with Jones for the starting job.
Alas, during the NFL Combine last week, the narrative changed. Reports surfaced that New York was openly seeking out trade partners to move up in the draft to find their new franchise quarterback.
NFL News & Rumors: Joe Schoen, Daniel Jones, 2024 NFL Draft, New York Giants Updates
Those reports are similar to what Rich Eisen heard and revealed on his show this week. According to what Eisen heard at the NFL Combine, the Giants are ready to move on from Jones and have buyer’s remorse.
“The Giants are absolutely done with Daniel Jones. The words I heard at the combine multiple times were buyer’s remorse.,” Eisen said on his show.
Last offseason, the Giants agreed to a four-year, $160 million contract with Jones right before the franchise tag deadline. That led to them placing the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley and changing the trajectory of the franchise for years to come.
Barkley, the most important player to the Giants’ offense, is set to hit the open market and could very well move on this offseason. Jones has an astronomical cap hit, meaning he will be on the roster for at least one more season, but his time with the franchise sounds like it is running out.

Realizing a mistake was made and trying to get out of it, instead of doubling down, is a smart move by Schoen and the franchise. He knows that his job is on the line and needs to do something to improve his odds of sticking around.
Moving on from a mistake and improving the long-term outlook of the franchise would be a good way to improve job security. Expect rumors to continue swirling as the Giants will seek out a trade partner to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft.
