In a recent interview, Aaron Rodgers spoke out about Zach Wilson and his progression with the New York Jets.

Coming into the season, the New York Jets had a plan in place at the quarterback position. After trading for Aaron Rodgers in the offseason, Rodgers was going to be under center for the Jets and hopefully lead them to the playoffs.

With Rodgers taking over as the starting quarterback, this would allow Zach Wilson, who was the No.2 overall pick a few years ago to sit behind Rodgers and learn. However, in the first game of the season, the Jets’ plans were foiled, as Rodgers tore his Achilles on the fourth play of the game.

Wilson was once again starting for New York after that, and he had a lot of struggles early on this season. However, of late, Wilson is playing better, and while he isn’t lighting it up for the Jets, he’s not making as many mistakes. Recently, Rodgers commented on Wilson’s development.

“I really don’t deserve a ton of credit for his progression,” Rodgers said. “It’s been his own work ethic, his own desire to improve in all areas of his life. I think it doesn’t hurt to have an example of an older guy who’s had some success and seeing how I go about my business. I’m sure there’s been some stuff that’s rubbed off on him.

“But, he deserves a lot of credit. He deserves a lot of credit for the way he’s handled himself, his maturity, for his focus on the fundamentals and getting better. I’m very, very proud of Zach. Proud of the progression I’ve seen on and off the field.”

Even though Aaron Rodgers isn’t taking any credit, the Jets have played better since he was allowed medically to be back with the team. As seen this offseason, Rodgers emerged as a leader for the Jets and a mentor to Zach Wilson. Furthermore, when he was getting surgery and post-surgery, the Jets did seem to miss him.

While Wilson and the Jets are playing better, there is still a lot of room for growth and development for him. Since the Jets have such a strong group around him, if he can continue to limit the mistakes, the Jets will find ways to win.
