Jets Linked To Former 1,000-Yard Receiver In Free Agency

The New York Jets entered free agency with a clear need at wide receiver, but they have not been able to get on the board yet in that category.

There was speculation that the Jets could pursue Calvin Ridley, but he ultimately signed a four-year, $92 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, a price New York was not willing to pay.

Fortunately for Gang Green, there are still a handful of capable wide outs available, and Connor Hughes of SNY thinks the Jets could pursue a receiver recently released by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mike Williams.

“He was a player that the Jets were very high on two years ago before he re-signed with LA,” Hughes said. “That could be something that they might get involved in. Again, he has had some injury issues which could drive his price down.”

Williams played in just three games this past season before tearing his ACL. During his time on the field, he logged 19 catches for 249 yards and a touchdown.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Clemson, was selected by the Chargers with the seventh overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

After an unimpactful rookie campaign, Williams caught 43 passes for 664 yards and 10 touchdowns during his sophomore season, flashing his big-play potential.

He then broke out when he snared 49 balls for 1,001 yards and a couple of scores in 2019, good for a ridiculous average of 20.4 yards per catch.

After taking a bit of a step back in 2020, Williams enjoyed the best year of his career to date in 2021, hauling in 76 receptions for 1,146 yards while reaching the end zone nine times.

Williams registered 63 grabs for 895 yards and four touchdowns during his most recent healthy campaign in 2022.

The Jets just opened up some more cap room by restructuring the contract of linebacker C.J. Mosley, so they may be preparing to make a push for Williams or another receiver.
