The New York Jets are in serious need of some depth at wide receiver, and Garrett Podell of CBS Sports thinks that Odell Beckham Jr. would be an interesting option.
Of course, Beckham is no longer the bona fide No. 1 wide out he was during his New York Giants days. As a matter of fact, he may no longer even be a low-end No. 2 at this stage.
Beckham spent this past season with the Baltimore Ravens, catching 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns. He logged just one 100-yard performance, and in the playoffs, he was almost non-existent.
Still, there is no doubt that Beckham can provide some punch to a Jets receiving corps that desperately needs it, and given that New York does not have much cap room heading into free agency, Beckham could end up being a solid bang-for-your-buck signing.
The Jets planned on contending for a Super Bowl in 2023 after acquiring Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers, but Rodgers tore his Achilles on Gang Green’s opening offensive drive of the season, effectively ending the club’s championship aspirations.
Now, going into 2024, it’s clear that New York still has some work to do even with a healthy Rodgers returning. The offensive line is a mess, and outside of Garrett Wilson, the Jets don’t have a lot of weapons at Rodgers’ disposal.
While signing a top-flight wide out like Mike Evans or Calvin Ridley would obviously represent more of an ideal scenario for New York, it simply may not have the financial resources to make that happen.
As a result, the Jets may have to turn to more affordable options, and Beckham certainly fits the bill.
There are definitely risks that come with Beckham. He is 31 years old with a very checkered injury history, and we know he is a volatile personality. Plus, he has not registered a 1,000-yard campaign since 2019, so his best days are undoubtedly behind him.
But on a cheap one-year deal, the Jets can’t really go wrong with giving Odell Beckham Jr. a shot.
