New York Jets May Have Gotten Lucky Break At Wide Receiver

The New York Jets have centered their team structure, including both roster and coaching staff, around the potential acquisition of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. While the success of this strategy remains uncertain due to Rodgers missing most of his first season in New York, the Jets find themselves committed to this path.

As the 2024 offseason approaches, there’s an opportunity to further reunite Rodgers with some of his former teammates, with one such player hitting the open market early.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Wednesday that the Kansas City Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to alleviate cap space. Valdes-Scantling, who spent four years with the Green Bay Packers before joining Kansas City in 2022, is now available for potential acquisition.

During his time in Green Bay, Valdes-Scantling wasn’t the primary target for Rodgers, but he still received significant attention from the star quarterback. Accumulating at least 50 targets in each of his four seasons with the Packers, Valdes-Scantling tallied 123 receptions, 2,153 yards, and 16 touchdowns.

Known for his prowess as a deep-threat specialist, Valdes-Scantling may not be classified as a top-tier WR1 or strong WR2, but he undeniably adds value as a supporting wide receiver. Maintaining an impressive career average of 17.0 yards per reception, including a league-leading 20.9 with Rodgers in 2020, highlights his big-play potential.

For the Jets, Valdes-Scantling’s addition could significantly enhance their passing game, particularly in terms of stretching the field—an area where they struggled in 2023. His ability to make big plays would alleviate defensive focus on receivers like Garrett Wilson, providing more opportunities for offensive success.

However, while Valdes-Scantling’s chemistry with Rodgers is a notable asset, it doesn’t necessarily justify overspending. The Jets have learned this lesson previously with Allen Lazard. Nevertheless, considering Valdes-Scantling’s connection with Rodgers, he remains a viable target for the Jets if the price is right.
