Jets Predicted To Bring Back Former Quarterback In Free Agency

If the New York Jets learned anything from this past season, it’s that they need to find a better backup quarterback.

The Jets went into 2023 with Aaron Rodgers under center after acquiring the future Hall-of-Famer in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers last spring.

As one would expect, New York had Super Bowl hopes heading into the year, but Rodgers ultimately tore his Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of the regular season, effectively ending Gang Green’s championship aspirations.

Zach Wilson was the next man up, and needless to say, that did not go very well.

Now, New York has given Wilson permission to seek a trade, as a change would obviously be best for both sides. But what are the Jets going to do about their No. 2 signal-caller?

Well, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports thinks they should bring back an old friend in Joe Flacco.

Flacco spent three seasons in New York between 2020 and 2022, serving primarily in a reserve role (he did make nine starts).

Of course, most recently, Flacco stepped in late in the season for the Cleveland Browns, taking over as the starting quarterback in December and leading the Browns to a 4-1 regular-season record during that span.

Flacco threw for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his five starts, which was enough to earn him the Comeback Player of the Year award.

It should be noted that Flacco showed his warts during the playoffs, throwing a couple of pick-sixes in a blowout loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, but, at the very least, the 39-year-old displayed he still has what it takes to be a very capable backup.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ health going into 2024, it would absolutely make sense for the Jets to sign Flacco for another go-around to provide some insurance under center.
