The Dallas Cowboys are a team many people expect to make a move to upgrade their roster before the trade deadline on October 31st. There are areas that need improvement on the roster, as they have proven capable of beating up on lower-echelon teams but need some work to stick with the uppers.
One of the areas in which Dallas needs to make an improvement is their red zone offense. The combination of Mike McCarthy calling plays and the lack of options to turn to has left the Cowboys regularly leaving points on the board.
A big reason that Dallas has struggled converting in the red zone is two of their best weapons the last few seasons, running back Ezekiel Elliott and tight end Dalton Schultz, both moved on this offseason. Elliott signed a deal with the New England Patriots while Schultz joined the Houston Texans.
No moves were made to counteract their departures, which has led to the Cowboys floundering. Bringing in some reinforcements offensively ahead of the deadline would make a lot of sense. During a recent episode of First Things First on FS1, Nick Wright suggested they look to make a blockbuster move to solve their woes.
Wright believes the Cowboys should make a call to the New York Giants and inquire about running back Saquon Barkley. “If I were (the Cowboys) I would try to make a dramatic move. I would call up the Giants about Saquon,” exclaimed Wright.
That would certainly qualify as a dramatic move, but a realistic one? Not too much. New York has reportedly assured Barkley that he won’t be traded ahead of the deadline as he wants to stay with the team.
It would also be hard to fathom the Giants not only throwing in the towel on their season but trading Barkley to a division rival such as the Cowboys on top of that. Dallas would need to blow them away with an offer to even get on the phone, and that likely wouldn’t even be enough to get the ball rolling.
If the Cowboys want to find offensive help they will have to look elsewhere with a week to go until the deadline.
