The Denver Broncos swung a trade with the New York Jets to acquire quarterback Zach Wilson on Monday, which seems like a depth move for the club.
However, Fox Sports analyst Chris Broussard thinks that the Broncos may have different plans for Wilson heading into 2024.
Broussard thinks that Denver is actually going to be starting Wilson in what would be a transitional year, setting the Broncos up to potentially select University of Colorado signal-caller Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Denver owns the 12th overall pick in the draft this week and many feel that the Broncos are going to take a quarterback now. However, they will likely not be able to land any of the very top prospects at that spot. They could trade up, or they could potentially take someone like Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon’s Bo Nix.
The thing is, Denver has plenty of other needs up and down the roster, so the Broncos may opt to go with a different position at No. 12 and then punt to next offseason for a quarterback.
Of course, that would be taking a risk.
Assuming Sanders ends up being a top-five pick next spring, there is no guarantee that Denver finishes with a bottom-five record (even though starting Wilson would certainly make it likely).
The best solution for the Broncos may be trading down from No. 12, which would allow them to stockpile some more draft capital while still giving them the opportunity to possibly select Penix or Nix later on in the first round or early second round.
We’ll see what Denver decides to do this week, but the Broncos will absolutely be one of the most interesting clubs to watch in this year’s NFL Draft.
Denver has not made the playoffs since it last won the Super Bowl during the 2015-16 campaign.
