NFL Draft QB JJ McCarthy Receives Brutal Comparison

University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is one of the hottest topics heading into the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

Somehow, he has become the most polarizing player in this year’s draft class, but he is still expected to be selected in the top 10.

Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd is hardly a fan of McCarthy and revealed a brutal comparison for him in a recent episode of the herd: former first-round bust Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky was selected No. 2 overall by the Chicago Bears back in 2017 and ended up being a major disappointment, spending four years with the Bears before the team gave up on him.

He then joined the Buffalo Bills for one season before linking up with the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years. He served as a backup for both clubs and most recently signed back with the Bills last month.

Of course, McCarthy’s circumstances are a bit different.

Trubisky was considered by many to be the best quarterback in his draft class (a class that included Patrick Mahomes), but McCarthy is generally ranked fourth (at best) on most draft boards this year.

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye are all expected to be selected before McCarthy, and there are some who feel that Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix would also be better options.

McCarthy is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he led Michigan to a national championship after throwing for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 72.3 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 202 yards and three scores.

The 21-year-old has been praised by some for his intangibles, but others are concerned about his physical limitations heading into the NFL.

We’ll see where J.J. McCarthy ends up on Thursday evening, and we’ll see if he proves his doubters wrong as he enters the pros.
