When the Pittsburgh Steelers took running back Najee Harris in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, they were hoping he would become a fixture in the backfield for the long haul. However, the Steelers’ patience with Harris may be wearing thin. A team like the Green Bay Packers, who clearly need running back help, could make an offer the Steelers shouldn’t refuse.
A former NFL executive has told the NFL Analysis Network that Pittsburgh may be preparing to move on from Harris, and he sees a prime destination for the halfback: the Packers.
“I think the Steelers are ready to move on from Najee Harris,” said the former exec. “If that is the case, the Packers should come calling. That running game has been awful and they need to do right by Jordan Love and do what it takes to bring in some help.”
Harris, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, immediately became the Steelers’ featured back during his rookie campaign. While he posted 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, his efficiency left much to be desired, as he averaged just 3.9 yards per carry. To be fair, he added 74 receptions for 467 yards and three scores, so Harris at least displayed some versatility.
But last year, the 25-year-old regressed, totaling 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns as a rusher while catching 41 passes for 229 yards and three scores. His efficiency also dipped, as he logged 3.8 yards per tote.
This season, it has been more of the same for Harris. He has registered 247 rushing yards through five games while recording just 3.9 yards per carry. Additionally, he has snared only five balls for 37 yards as a receiver.
Still, even with Harris’ lackluster overall production, he would be an upgrade over what the Packers are currently employing in their backfield.
Aaron Jones has been in and out of the lineup due to a hamstring injury, and A.J. Dillon has not exactly gotten the job done in Jones’ stead.
Green Bay ranks 27th in the NFL in rushing offense, so adding Harris could certainly provide the club with an offensive boost.
