NFL Exec Believes Giants Should Target Kirk Cousins

Could the New York Giants target Kirk Cousins to be their quarterback for next season?

A former executive tells the NFL Analysis Network that the Giants should absolutely pursue Cousins this offseason to take Daniel Jones’ place under center in 2024.

“Daniel Jones is done in New York,” said the former exec. “Unfortunately, he’s done after they paid him a huge contract. I think Kirk Cousins would be a perfect replacement target for the Giants.”

Jones suffered a torn ACL during New York’s Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, putting an unfortunate period at the end of a nightmarish campaign for the signal-caller.

The 26-year-old played in six games this season, missing three contests due to a neck issue prior to going down with the knee injury. During his time on the field, he threw for 909 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 67.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 70.5.

This comes on the heels of Jones signing a four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants back in the spring. There is $82 million in guaranteed money in the deal.

Meanwhile, Cousins just tore his Achilles, ending his 2023 campaign for the Minnesota Vikings. Cousins is set to be a free agent this offseason, and there has been plenty of speculation that he will be playing football elsewhere come Week 1 of next year.

Production isn’t the issue with Kirk Cousins. Before getting injured, he was on pace to have possibly the best season of his career, throwing for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five picks through Week 9. The sticking points could be that he will be 36 years old at the start of next season and is coming off of a major injury.

What New York decides to do at quarterback will be one of the most intriguing storylines to follow this coming offseason. Trading Jones will obviously be difficult given his contract. Could the Giants merely cut bait with him? They would have to eat some money of course, but it could end up being the most fertile course of action in order for Big Blue to effectively move forward.

New York is just 2-7 on the season.
