NFL Exec Reveals One Trade Target The Colts Must Pursue

The Indianapolis Colts fell to 3-3 after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 37-20 on Sunday afternoon, dropping them into a tie for second place in the AFC South as the Jaguars took the top spot.

Not many expected the Colts to be all that competitive this season, so the fact that they are even .500 through six weeks is fairly surprising.

Given that Indianapolis plays in a very winnable division, the Colts are very much alive heading into Week 7, and with the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline looming, Indy could very well make some moves to bolster its roster for the stretch run.

A former NFL executive tells the NFL Analysis Network that he thinks the Colts should look at Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II as a potential acquisition before the end of the month.

“The Broncos would be foolish to trade him, but Patrick Surtain II is a player I’m keeping an eye on,” the former exec said. “If I’m the Colts and (general manager) Chris Ballard, I’m doing everything I can to convince Denver to pull the trigger.”

Surtain’s name has been floated around as a possible trade candidate for the last several weeks as the Broncos have continued to spiral.

Denver is now just 1-5 on the season, and there have been rumors that the Broncos will sell off some pieces between now and Halloween.

But would Denver seriously move Surtain?

Assuming the Broncos exercise Surtain’s fifth-year option, he will be under team control through 2025. He is still just 23 years old and is one of the game’s best cornerbacks, so the University of Alabama product is probably not high on the list of players that Denver is looking to trade.

However, given how dire the situation currently is in the Mile High City, you have to wonder if the Broncos would pull the trigger if they are able to bring in a haul of draft picks in return.

Through the first six games of 2023, Surtain has logged 25 tackles, an interception and six passes defended. He made the Pro Bowl and earned a First-Team All-Pro selection last season.

The Colts rank 23rd in the NFL in passing defense, so adding Surtain would obviously be a blockbuster move for the club.
