The Buffalo Bills traded wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans last week, but could they replace him with Cincinnati Bengals star Tee Higgins?
Higgins requested a trade from the Bengals earlier this offseason after Cincinnati slapped a franchise tag on him ahead of free agency.
That decision by Cincy was obviously not too pleasing to Higgins, and now, the Bengals will have until the middle of July to reach a long-term deal with him.
If Cincinnati is unable to strike an extension with Higgins before then, Cincy will have to revisit the situation next offseason.
Or, the Bengals can trade him now.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay suggests that the Bills send a 2025 second-round draft pick and a fifth-rounder this year to Cincinnati in exchange for Higgins, who would instantly become Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver.
While this deal may look good on the surface, it would present problems for both sides.
For the Bills, Higgins may end up being too expensive. Buffalo does not have a very good salary cap situation, and it is actually absorbing a $31 million cap hit just be trading Diggs.
Remember: the Bills had to release numerous key players before the new league year just to get under the cap, so their financial situation is still very tight.
Then on the Bengals’ side of things, they really don’t have to trade Higgins.
Cincinnati is contending for a Super Bowl, and moving Higgins would obviously sabotage its chances. Of course, Higgins can threaten to sit out 2024, but it doesn’t seem likely that he will do that. At least not at this point.
The idea of Tee Higgins as a Diggs replacement certainly sounds good for Buffalo, but it probably just isn’t very realistic right now.
