Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is apparently undergoing some changes this offseason in preparation for the 2024 campaign.
Omar Kelly of All Dolphins notes that Tagovailoa looked like he had slimmed down when pictured at a recent golf event in Hawaii, and Tagovailoa’s trainer, Nick Hicks, the star signal-caller is losing weight in an attempt to increase his mobility heading into next season.
Tagovailoa had been criticized for being a tad overweight in 2023, and the Pro Bowler seems to be taking the criticisms to heart.
The 26-year-old is coming off of a terrific season in which he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards to go along with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also completed 69.3 percent of his passes while posting a passer rating of 101.1.
Tagovailoa, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Dolphins with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Many feel that Tagovailoa is not a legitimate franchise quarterback and is merely a product of terrific receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
The fact that the Ewa Beach, Hi. native struggled over his first couple of seasons and then broke out after Miami added Hill in 2022 lends some credence to that notion.
There are also questions as to whether or not Tagovailoa can handle cold weather or if he can regularly beat good teams.
Still, it’s hard to argue with the numbers. Not only did Tagovailoa lead the league in passing yards this past season, but he also paced the NFL with a 105.5 passer rating in 2022.
We’ll see if Tua Tagovailoa ends up being a bit more agile in 2024 after losing weight this offseason.
