New York Jets
The Jets running back group is the most interesting of the bunch. First, the offensive line in New York will be completely different from last season and this was something that needed to be done. The Jets used their first-round draft pick on Louisville’s Mekhi Becton.
In free agency, New York added Greg Van Roten, Alex Lewis, George Fant, and Connor McGovern. This should help Le’Veon Bell, who is the biggest name at the position in the AFC East.
The Jets signed Bell to a four-year, $52.5 million deal prior to the 2019 season. This was to the dismay of head coach Adam Gase. It even led to the firing of general manager Mike Maccagnan. Gase will undoubtedly be next but that is beside the point. Bell looked a step slow in 2019 after his year off. He carried the ball 245 times for 789 yards and three touchdowns. He added 66 catches.
Bell’s 3.2 yards per carry in 2019 was the lowest of his career. This is something the Jets are hoping will improve with the new offensive line. There was talk that Bell might not even be back this season. His future beyond 2020 is unknown despite his contract. New York added Gore in free agency. He will be a much needed veteran presence in the locker room and on the field. New York also drafted La’Mical Perine in the fourth round out of Florida.
The Jets always have eyes on them as people wait to see how they will mess up their season. This might not be the case in the backfield in 2020. If Bell is healthy, he could benefit from a rebuilt line and big workload. He is a bulk runner that needs the ball in his hands. Bell will also have some help behind him.
If the Jets are forced to choose between Gase and Bell, the choice is clear. New York needs a new head coach in the worst way. In 2020, Bell just needs to worry about his own production and helping Sam Darnold take the next step.
