The Indianapolis Colts had one of the better offseasons of any team in the NFL. They were able to fill some holes throughout the roster and look ready to compete for an AFC South divisional title once again.
They could still use a little depth at some spots, one of them being at wide receiver. Bringing in another veteran certainly wouldn’t hurt as they could use some more experience at the position. Indianapolis is relying on a lot of youth at the position as Keke Coutee, with four seasons of playing in the NFL, is the most experienced of the bunch.
Luckily for the Colts, there are a lot of solid veterans remaining in free agency. One of the most prominent names is Julio Jones, who Bill Barnwell of ESPN is predicting will sign with Indianapolis.
The market has been ice cold for Jones, as there hasn’t been much discussion about where he could end up this season. An injury-riddled season with the Tennessee Titans has a lot to do with that, as Jones put up career-low numbers across the board.
In 10 games, he caught 31 passes for 431 yards and only one touchdown. That followed up an injury-riddled 2020 when Jones played in only nine games. But, Barnwell believes that it is still a little too early to write Jones off as a productive receiver as he was still putting up elite numbers in 2019.
An alignment adjustment is something that could help prolong Jones’ career. Larry Fitzgerald is the prototype when it comes to that in the modern NFL, as he played less on the perimeter and more in the slot later on in his career.
The connection to new Colts quarterback Matt Ryan is another reason that landing with the Colts would make sense. They have 10 years of experience playing with each other from their time with the Atlanta Falcons and could rekindle that chemistry.
Playing at least half of the season in a dome in Indianapolis could also benefit Jones at this point in his career. There are a lot of positives to signing with the Colts and it could very well be where the future Hall of Famer ends up landing.
