Former NFL tight end and current analyst Shannon Sharpe ripped Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce for attending Game 1 of the World Series last Friday, two days before his team’s Week 8 matchup with the Denver Broncos—which the Chiefs lost.
“We know the only receiver [Patrick Mahomes] can consistently count on is Travis Kelce, and he didn’t have his best day. And I’m kind of disappointed because, Friday night he was at the Rangers game,” Sharpe said on his The Nightcap podcast with former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson.
Johnson asked why Sharpe had such an issue with Kelce going to the World Series, to which Sharpe replied by saying, “It’s the middle of the season.”
Sharpe went on to call it an “awful look” by Kelce, who ended up logging six catches for 58 yards in Kansas City’s 24-9 loss to the Broncos.
“It [Game 1 of the World Series] was in Texas. He lives in Kansas City,” Sharpe added.
Sharpe also said that coaches always told him to “get off his feet” on Fridays, which is why he thinks it wasn’t a great idea for Kelce to board a flight.
While Sharpe may have a point, it seems hard to imagine that Kelce’s decision to attend a World Series game was the reason why the Chiefs lost this past weekend.
First of all, Mahomes had one of the worst outings of his career, and that certainly had something to do with the fact that he was playing with the flu.
Second, it’s not like Kelce was unproductive in the loss, and it’s not his fault that Kansas City’s front office has failed to put reliable weapons around Mahomes this season.
Not only that, but Denver seems to play the Chiefs tough. Earlier in the year, the Broncos held Kansas City to 19 points at Arrowhead Stadium. Sure, the Chiefs won the game 19-8, but it’s not like it was a blowout.
Should Kelce probably be focused on the game on Friday? Yes. Is Sharpe getting carried away? Probably yes, as well.
Kansas City will aim to get back on track when it takes on the Miami Dolphins in Germany this Sunday. Now if Travis Kelce skips town again this week, then we have a problem.
