The San Francisco 49ers came up just short against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but they suffered a huge loss that altered the entire game in the process. Star linebacker, Dre Greenlaw, went down with a torn Achilles tendon while running onto the field in the middle of the game.

Greenlaw was a huge leader for the defense and was one of their top playmakers as well. Losing him was a massive blow, especially going up against an offense led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

While we’re in the middle of the “dead period” of the offseason following the NFL Draft, Greenlaw spoke out with a major update about this recovery from the brutal Achilles injury.

“It’s a long, slow process that you just kind of gotta be ready for every day to wake up and attack whatever it is that I’m trying to work on,” Greenlaw said. “And for me, that’s, right now, just the strength and the mobility, just trying to get good range of motion in it. But also, just making sure I’m getting the strength while I’m getting that range of motion, too, because, you don’t want to get all just range of motion in it and with no strength and all that kind of stuff. So just trying to get better, get stronger and all that good stuff.”

The San Francisco 49ers Need A Healthy Dre Greenlaw

Looking ahead at the upcoming 2024 NFL season, the 49ers can only hope that Greenlaw is able to make a full recovery and get back to playing at his usual elite level at some point during the year.

During the 2023 season, Greenlaw left a clear mark on the 49ers. He racked up 120 total tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and four defended passes. In the playoffs, he had two interceptions.

Needless to say, hearing this kind of positive update from Greenlaw himself is big for the 49ers. When healthy, they have one of the best defenses in the entire NFL. That is what they hang their hat on, along with star quarterback Brock Purdy consistently putting up good production on the offensive side of the ball.

At 26 years of age, Dre Greenlaw is also at the right age to be able to bounce back fully from this kind of brutal injury. Older players struggle much more to come back from Achilles injuries.

While it was a stroke of bad luck for Greenlaw and the San Francisco 49ers that the injury happened in the Super Bowl, it seems that he’s on the right track to get back during the 2024 season. They will certainly need him as the NFC has continued to improve around them.
