The Green Bay Packers have lost two straight games following a 2-1 start to the NFL season, and over the last two weeks, their offense has been a clear issue.
The Packers have scored just 33 points over their last two games, most recently putting up a 13-spot in a four-point loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.
Former Green Bay quarterback Kurt Benkert, who had a cup of coffee with the Packers in 2021 and again in 2022, took to X on Monday to call out head coach Matt LaFleur for his lack of innovative play-calling.
“I’ll start by giving my honest opinions about the scheme. It’s outdated, and there is a better way to play offense right now,” wrote Benkert, who admitted that he butted heads with LaFleur during his short time with the club. “I’m not going to go into full detail, but I talk about this stuff all the time on my reviews.”
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Matt LaFleur & Green Bay Packers Updates
The Packers’ offense currently ranks 28th in the NFL. Now, to be fair to LaFleur, personnel is also an issue. Jordan Love is in his first season as a full-time starter under center, and as expected, his early returns have been rather mixed. After a relatively strong start to 2023, Love has labored mightily the past couple of weeks, throwing one touchdown and five interceptions.
LaFleur has also been without his starting running back Aaron Jones, for three out of the first five games, and the club’s receiving corps is very unproven.
So, while LaFleur may certainly deserve some blame for not running a proper offense, the Packers’ struggles also have a lot to do with the fact that the roster isn’t that great.
