NFL: Which free-agent QB is set up for the most success in 2020?

Chargers, Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers

The Indianapolis Colts were taken by surprise when Andrew Luck decided to retire from the NFL last offseason. Once Luck retired, the Colts felt comfortable naming Jacoby Brissett as his replacement. Indianapolis went as far as to give Brissett a two-year extension worth $30 million. Fast forward to now and the Colts have replaced Brissett with Rivers.

Seeing that Rivers has experience with Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni, he’s expected to be a valuable piece for the Colts. Last season, with Brissett and Brian Hoyer at quarterback, Indianapolis attempted the eighth-fewest passes in the NFL. While Reich wants to instill a controlled rushing attack with Marlon Mack and rookie Jonathan Taylor, Rivers is going to be throwing a bit more than Brissett did in 2019.

The good news for Rivers is that he’ll get a chance to throw behind arguably the most formidable offensive line in the NFL. Altogether, the Colts’ offensive line allowed just 18 sacks in 2019. Plus, the veteran gunslinger is going to have a set of viable targets in the offense. T.Y. Hilton, Parris Campbell, Jack Doyle, and rookie Michael Pittman Jr. all figure to have roles in the offense.

In his final season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Rivers mightily struggled with 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Those numbers should look exponentially better in 2020 with the Colts. Above all, after missing the playoffs in five of his last six seasons with the Chargers, Rivers is on a team that has a favorable chance to capture the AFC South title next season. While Rivers could have success, it’s tough to envision him having more success than the No. 1 guy on this list.
